What is the Early Years Foundation Stage?               

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old. It is a framework setting the standards for learning, development and care for children during this period. Nurseries, pre-schools, reception classes and child-minders must follow a document called the EYFS Framework which supports an integrated approach to early learning and care. It gives all professionals a set of common principles and commitments to deliver quality early education and childcare experiences to all children.

Throughout the Early Years Foundation Stage each child’s development will be observed, assessed and monitored by the adults. These assessments will be made in relation to the ‘Development Matters’ statements in the EYFS framework. The Development Matters document is split into the Prime and Specific Areas. The Prime Areas are Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development. These areas are important in the development of a child as this will allow them to develop the skills they need to be lifelong learners. The Specific Areas are Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design. Assessments in all these areas are made on a cumulative set of observations and knowledge of the whole child. We use information from home, every day observations, photographs and knowledge of the child to help us to assess a particular development matters statement and to inform future activities in order to extend your child’s learning.

We believe that children learn through play and exploration. They are encouraged to join in activities, to be independent and to make choices. We offer a rich and varied curriculum in a safe and inviting environment.

We understand that children develop at their own pace, but with encouragement and opportunity will reach their full potential. Children learn best when they are happy, safe and secure. The staff are there to guide and teach and will get to know you and your child well during your time here.

We have many areas in the Nursery and Reception to support and develop your child’s learning;

  • Maths tables
  • Writing areas
  • Construction
  • Small world
  • Role play and dressing up
  • Sand and water
  • Paint and collage
  • Phonics
  • Malleable – playdough, gloop, (messy play!)

The children will also take part in carpet learning times to encourage them to work as part of a larger group and extend their learning. They will have a daily carpet session to teach them phonics as well as sessions linked to the other areas of learning.
